| OnlineHost | The Rolling Stones didn't invent rock'n'roll -- it |
| just seems that way. Over the years, they've demonstrated the unique ability of first defining a genre and then transcending it. Albums such as "Exile On Main St.," "Sticky Fingers" and "Goat's Head Soup" were regarded as being both ahead of their time and timeless. |
| OnlineHost | Either way, they became the barometer by which |
| all blues-based rock bands are now measured. Through the years, the Stones have embodied the essence of rock star cool, their larger than life aura confirming their title as "The World's Greatest Rock'N'Roll Band." The Stones are currently touring the U.S. in support of their new |
| OnlineHost | They will be back in the U.S. in '98, and then |
| head to South America, Japan, and will be touring Europe in May. For those who want to witness the show in all its raging glory, the Stones will present a live Pay Per View concert broadcast on December 12 from St. Louis. |
| OnlineHost | Tonight we are joined by the Rolling Stones' lead |
| singer Mick Jagger, who has spent 35 years strutting at the very pinnacle of superstardom. Often copied, but never equaled, Jagger is still the most sought-after frontman in the world. Now, he's ready to take your questions about Babylon welcome Mick Jagger! |
| OnlineHost | Welcome to AOL Live Mick Jagger! This event is being simulcast in its entirety to |
| America Online's Japanese audience, and questions & comments are being simulcast from our audience in Japan! It's truly an "East meets West" event! |
| MICKJAGGER | Good Evening everyone |
| OnlineHost | Lets get the ball rolling! :) The first question.... |
| Question | Mick, What advice can you give to a young, inspired musicen? |
| MICKJAGGER | Play as much as you can every night to as many people as possible. Be as mad and as wild as you can. |
| Question | Hi Mick! First I'd like to say I loved the Bridges to Babylon concert, My question is Where is your favorite place in The United States to persorm? |
| MICKJAGGER | Well to answer this question backwards, its always slightly more difficult to perform in Los Angeles and New York because the first night there the audience behaves as if its the first night of the tour whether it is or not. Each place has its own personality. Small towns get more swept up in the whole event than say a big town like Los Angeles. One of the stops on the tour so far in San Francisco, we did four shows with Pearl Jam and I enjoyed each show. It always threatened to rain every night but in the end, it never did and moonlight rained instead. |
| Question | Which is your favourite track from Bridges to Babylon & why? |
| MICKJAGGER | At the moment, performing "Saint Of Me" is a pretty good high every night but as I am so fickle, I will no doubt move on in a few weeks to another one. |
| Question | What attracted you to the role that you play in your new film Bent? What is it with English guys and dresses? |
| MICKJAGGER | I was not attracted to play the part of Greta in the film because she has glamourous costumes and silky underwear. It is the depth of the character and the arc that I bring to pass in the role that I felt was a challenge to my cross-dressing abilities. By the way Englishmen arent the only people to wear dresses, look at the Balinese. |
| Question | Mick, what television programs do you watch on tour? |
| MICKJAGGER | I watch very little television on tour. A few sports programs. But I watched a wonderful program about the history of vaudeville on PBS the other night. |
| Question | Do you have any special messages you'd like to give your Japanese fans in AOL Japan? |
| MICKJAGGER | We're looking forward to visiting you in March and this time we're also visiting Osaka so that will be a first for the Stones though I seem to remember being there before. Please send us any special song requests to our Stones site bulletin board and we'll put them on the voting list. |
| OnlineHost | Thanks! Next question.... |
| Question | Will "Ladies and Gentlemen The Rolling Stones" ever be released on video and CD like "Circus"? |
| MICKJAGGER | Not at the moment, but I'll look into it. |
| Question | I'd say that Babylon and Voodoo was better sounding than any other Stones Album, you guys certainly prove rock gets better with age, my question is would you consider releasing a live album with all the Web Choices from this tour? |
| MICKJAGGER | Interesting, I never thought of that. Who knows. |
| Question | do you have a favorite song from your whole career? |
| MICKJAGGER | No. I have favorites of the week. Last week it was "When The Whip Comes Down" but it changes with the tide. |
| Question | will this be your last stadium tour? |
| MICKJAGGER | My crystal ball is in my hands as we interrelate on the internet and inter us two interestingly the glass has misted over and I can no longer see the future cross my hand with silver dearie and I'll try again. |
| Question | I hear you are doing another pay per view special this month. I remember you had eric clapton in one and sheryl crow in another. will there be any spedial guests like you had in previous ones? |
| MICKJAGGER | I hope so. We are in the process of lining them up so they can be trotted out to an unsuspecting public. |
| Question | hi Mick, we're looking forward to see you in Germany, say, will the band do more than two songs from the new album? |
| MICKJAGGER | You guys are up late! Keep that coffee brewing and anything else you might have at hand. At the moment we're doing four or five songs from the album and we'll probably stop at six. Hope this suits. |
| Question | are you tired yet? :) |
| MICKJAGGER | No, though I must say I'm looking forward to a bit of a break over Christmas which is of course more tiring than touring, as we all know. |
| Question | Mick after all these years and all the hits you guys have had dont you feel like just saying alright i am going to kick back and watch the world go around and enjoy my life and enjoy the memorys and listen to the new groups, what new groups do you like? |
| MICKJAGGER | That's a lot of questions and statements. Just before I came down to chat, I was listening to The Verve which seems to grow on you but I don't feel like putting my feet up quite yet. |
| Question | london calling, mick! for two weeks running, the Observer here in England has been running stories about you being involved with a company doing something with cricket on the web. Is there any truth to that? |
| MICKJAGGER | I have been trying to put together an internet site to broadcast live audio and video highlights of the champions trophy from Sharjah on December 11, but I'm not quite ready to announce the whole shebang until its neatly wrapped up. |
| Question | is there personal signifigance to "babylon" in the title of tour and cd, I know you used to like ancient history? |
| MICKJAGGER | I know a lot more about life in Babylon now than I did at the beginning of the tour but life in the Babylon Bar precedes apace. |
| OnlineHost | Next question for Mick Jagger.... |
| Question | Does Mick Consider the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & Museum A good thing ?RudeBeHavUr |
| MICKJAGGER | I've never actually been there, although some of my frocks have. |
| Question | mick, any plans to release another box set? |
| MICKJAGGER | I didn't know we had released a box set. Perhaps there are ABCKO boxed sets but there are no plans in the near future for such a project. Aren't they a bit passe? |
| Question | whose idea was it to ask the internet to vote for a song to put in the set list each night? |
| MICKJAGGER | We had been toying with the idea of some kind of audience request but it always seemed so complicated and stagey. This seems to work out because its quick and involves people from outside of the actual show. |
| OnlineHost | And to follow up that question..... |
| Question | hi mick- have seen the band 33 times since 1966-at giants stadium you seemed surprised that factory girl was the cyber song- were you surprised at any other choices in the other shows |
| MICKJAGGER | Yes I was a bit surprised as it had always got such a meager vote on previous days. Congratulations on your stamina, by the way. Are you aiming at 100 shows? |
| Question | What was the last song you have written on the road? |
| MICKJAGGER | I can't remember when I wrote a song on the road. I don't seem to find it very conducive I guess. |
| Question | tell me , how do you sing in front of lots of people? i have top 40 in a week(it's a concert) and i have to sing in front of all my class mates. Do YOU ever get stagefright? |
| MICKJAGGER | I always find it more difficult to sing in front of friends than a large crowd of people that you don't know. You're bound to be nervous for the first five minutes but just keep on and you will cool out. |
| OnlineHost | And for the tour press conference.... |
| Question | What made you guys get a Cadillac to cruise around in...did you have any other choices for a crusin car? |
| MICKJAGGER | Yes several choices. We talked about an old Lincoln, a 30's Mercedes (Too SS) a 60's Bently (two staid), and a Packard (wrong color). Good question. |
| Question | my girlfriend and i just saw your film BENT over the weekend and wanted to get the song you did in it. We can't find the soundtrack anywhere, is there one? |
| MICKJAGGER | I'm afraid there is no soundtrack available at the moment. We live in hope. |
| Question | Hey Mick--I just wanted to thank you for nearly 35 years of brilliant songwriting and performing. What do you find most exciting artistically about being in the band after all these years? |
| MICKJAGGER | There are so many different aspects to creativity with these kind of projects. The music, the lyrics, the stage design, the clothes, the T-Shirts, the AOL interviews. The list is endless. But seriously, I enjoy all those things. |
| Question | What inspired "Anybody Seen My Baby"? |
| MICKJAGGER | A beautiful girl disappearing in the mists of New York. What was her name? Would you ever meet her? |
| Question | Does the audience still thrill you? |
| MICKJAGGER | When we're both burning it is the most exciting experience one could have. |
| Question | Mick, Do you find it hard to introduce new material when everyone expects the classics from you? How far would you depart from your current style if you could. Do you secretly enjoy something other than Rock and Roll for yourself in the home..? |
| MICKJAGGER | Some people want only to hear the well known songs. And others prefer obscure ones. Yet others would rather listen to the new ones. So, its quite a balancing act playing a stadium show to please ourselves and everyone else. At home, I listen to all kinds of music and don't really exclude anything. But I'm not mad about trance at breakfast. |
| Question | do you ever look at emails or message boards to get feed back on the tour? |
| MICKJAGGER | Yes from time to time I do read them and get some pretty good feedback and a good laugh at some of the spats. |
| Question | Mr. Jagger. If you could go back and change one thing in recent 20th century history, tragedy or otherwise, to make it come out different, what would you change?? |
| MICKJAGGER | You mean erase both of the world wars and the Depression, the destruction of the ecosystem of the planet with a wave of the wand. Well, there's a start. |
| Question | If you could give everyone in the world one thing for Christmas, what would it be? |
| MICKJAGGER | A whistle. |
| Question | who do you think is more loyal the BRIT fans or the USA FANS ? |
| MICKJAGGER | They both have different qualities, he said diplomatically. |
| Question | Has your opinion on getting involved politically changed over the years? |
| MICKJAGGER | I've never really been involved with political parties, and tha that has stayed the same |
| Question | Hi Mick :-) Looking back over the years at the Rolling Stones and your input in the group, is there anything you would do differently? and if so What would that be? Please comment. |
| MICKJAGGER | No I'd keep it just as it was. |
| Question | Mick, you and Keith look fabulous. How do you keep in such good shape? |
| MICKJAGGER | By eating pizza, which I've just polished off. Now I'm going out to the movies and eat a bag of popcorn. Then to a smoky club. |
| Question | Hi Mick, I'm from Cleveland and just wanted to know how you spent Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love your music and only wish the best for you during the holidays and the new year. Take care and come back to Cleveland. |
| MICKJAGGER | Thank you very much for your kind wishes for the holidays. I missed Thanksgiving this year, as I will probably get a turkey for Christmas. One of these critters is enough. |
| Question | Mr.Jagger do you miss the smaller shows like the Fox in Atl. GA.? And will there be any smaller ones in the future? JOPAPA Chatta.TN |
| MICKJAGGER | We are doing some small shows on this section. The one on Port Chester, New York was a lot of fun. And there are one or two more to come. |
| Question | Mick what has kept your band together for so long? |
| MICKJAGGER | Patience is a virtue. |
| Question | Hi! The set list on this tour has pleasantly been shaken up a bit to include a wider range and mix of songs. It was great to hear Crazy Mama, for instance. Was this a conscious move on the band's part to mix it up a bit? |
| MICKJAGGER | Yes perhaps it was a little conservative for the first couple of shows so that we could get our balance but I prefer it like it is now. |
| Question | I was wondering what you sing in the shower? |
| MICKJAGGER | Singing In The Rain and I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair. |
| Question | DO YOU HAVE A COMPUTER AT HOME, IF SO DO YOU GO ONLINE ALOT? |
| MICKJAGGER | On the tour, too much though I use it less when I stop. |
| OnlineHost | And for the last question of the evening.. |
| Question | What impact do you think the Internet has had on the music being made today? Do you feel that the available modern technology impacts the creative product (as opposed to how it is marketed)? |
| MICKJAGGER | I don't really feel that the internet has really influenced the creative act of music making yet though of course, computer technology has been in that place for years. Is staring at screens good for composition? Time will tell. |
| OnlineHost | All good things must come to an end. Time is up for this event! |
| AOLiveMC13 | Thanks for being with us tonight, Mick Jagger, and taking our questions! |
| MICKJAGGER | I've enjoyed this session very much and look forward to seeing everybody wherever they are in the world on the tour somewhere. Goodbye and God bless! |
